Curriculum Overview

This half term we have lots more fun learning planned out and we would love to see any learning linked to this at home too.

Literacy

Story - Rapunzel  (Please do not share this story with the children until we have in class)

In this unit the children will be reading a traditional tale and will be immersed in new and exciting vocabulary which will capture their imaginations. As the children’s learning progresses through the unit they will plan and write their own traditional tale narrative.

We will be focusing on:

  • Capital letters and full stops

  • Letter formation

  • Using adjectives correctly

  • Correct spacing between letters and words

  • Handwriting

  • suffixes -ed -ing and -est (verbs)

Read Write Inc

Children will attend daily phonics groups based on their assessment. Children who have come off the phonics programme will focus on spelling and different comprehension style questions.

Maths

Children will be doing daily Singapore Maths lessons. These lessons allow the children to explore a problem utilising a selection of resources to support their learning. This also allows the children to discover different methods to solve the problem and enables them to see links between the different areas of the Maths curriculum. There will be additional challenge involved to ensure mastery of number appropriate for every child's level of learning.

This half term we  will be focusing on:

  • 2D and 3D Shapes
  • Recognising numbers to 20
  • Addition and Subtraction within 20
  • Fractions

Topic:

Science

The children will be learning all about materials in science this half term. They will be learning to identify and name everyday materials and use scientific vocabulary to describe properties. The children will also be working scientifically to investigate materials that are waterproof and also the uses of opaque, translucent and transparent materials.

History

We will be learning about the past and how schools were different for our grandparents compared to school now. We will be looking at different pictorial artefacts of schools to make comparisons and create discussion.

Geography

In Geography this half term we will be learning about Our Local Area, Greasby. We will talk about what the difference is between a city, town and village and we will identify key features of each area. We will be taking our fieldwork walk around Greasby village and looking for man-made and physical features. We will record our journey so that we can then replicate it on our own maps when back in the classroom.

RE

We will be learning about Christianity. The theme is The Christmas Story.

Key Questions explored throughout this unit of work:

  • What is a gift?

  • What gifts are special to you?

  • What gifts might Christians in my town have given Jesus if he had been born here rather than in Bethlehem?

Art/DT

In Art we will be looking at the  artists L.S Lowry and Bethan Woollvin to support us in  developing our drawing techniques. We will create artwork around urban landscapes developing techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape form and space.

In DT we will be learning how to plan make and evaluate somethings that works and moves in order to help Rapunzel escape from the tower.
