PSHE at Greasby Infant School

Intent

PSHE education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. At Greasby Infant School we recognise that Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society and play a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. It is important that they are given a wide range of opportunities to develop their own identity as well as respecting others.  Relationships and sex education (RSE) is an important part of PSHE education. Relationships education is compulsory for all primary school pupils.

Implementation

PSHE is taught on a weekly basis at Greasby Infant School. We follow a scheme called Jigsaw which provided a comprehensive PSHE Programme which covers all the requirements of the government guidance and outcomes.

There are six topics in total. Staff tailor the episodes of learning to suit the individual needs of the children, ensuring appropriate support and differentiation for all groups of pupils so that all children can access the curriculum. Below is a list of the topics covered on a half termly basis in each year group:

  •        Being Me in My World
  •        Celebrating Difference
  •        Dreams and Goals
  •        Healthy Me
  •        Relationships
  •        Changing Me

Jigsaw’s philosophy starts by building positive self-image, a sense of identity and a healthy relationship with self, before supporting the children to grow healthy relationships with others. Jigsaw values every child and promote the acceptance of their unique identity. Health Education in Jigsaw embraces not only physical health but has a strong focus on wellbeing and emotional literacy and empowers children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and know how to manage and regulate these. The Relationships, Healthy Me and Changing Me Puzzles (units) cover many of the aspects in the RSE guidance.

Impact

Staff will deliver a high-quality curriculum following our scheme of work which demonstrates a clear progression of knowledge, skills and understanding across the year groups.

At the end of each term, our will use a variety of assessment tools to ascertain progress including book scrutiny and pupil discussion about their learning.

The children at Greasby Infants enjoy their Jigsaw lessons and talk about them fondly. They understand the structure of each lesson and use this time to develop their own identity and relationships with others.
